Having attended both Open House sessions hosted by JCOS re: the Improving Visitor Experiences (Apex Park management policy review), COMBA has formally submitted our position statement to Jeffco Open Space leadership.
We encourage all interested parties to read our complete submission (PDF), and to attend the OSAC meeting this Thursday, July 2nd, to voice your support.
A very brief summary of points follows below:
Due to rain and lightening in Evergreen this evening, we are canceling tonight's social ride. Please join us on our next ride. Details about upcoming rides can be found at:
Most of you already know that Jefferson County is considering changes to the management strategy in an effort to enhance the visitor experience at Apex, one of the most popular mountain biking spots on the Front Range. A big thanks to everyone who has already filled out an Electronic Feedback Form.
Yes, another hot topic among mountain bikers. Jefferson County Open Space is in the process of reviewing its yielding regulations. We all know these are fairly controversial among mountain bikers because the current language is open to a fair bit of interpretation.
JCSO is seeking input from user groups and comments are due by July 6. You can get electronic information about how to comment at: http://www.co.jefferson.co.us/jeffco/openspace_uploads/yielding_info.pdf.
Just a reminder that members of COMBA are riding the Firecracker 50 on July 4 in Breckenridge as a fundraiser. This is a great opportunity for you to give because a significant portion of the funds we raise will be matched by SRAM. So far, we've collected more than $3,000 in donations.
We had a great turn-out in May for our inaugural social ride at Lair o' the Bear. Thanks to all that attended. It was great to meet some new friends and share a perfect evening on the trail.
Our next social ride will be Thursday, June 25, at Alderfer/Three Sisters Park outside Evergreen. We'll meet at the upper lot off Buffalo Park Road at 5:45 p.m. - look for the COMBA banner - and try to have the fat tires rolling down the trail by 6 p.m.
We had a great group of dedicated riders and trail-builders show up for the first "Black Diamond" build weekend at Buffalo Creek. We accomplished more than we had hoped during the weekend, and we are excited to continue building a sustainable trail with progressive riding features in Buffalo Creek on July 18-19. Some basics about the project include:
- It will be a purpose-built "black diamond" mountain bike trail in the Buffalo Creek area of the Pike National Forest.
OK, maybe it doesn't count as epic singletrack, but it is an important bike route in the City of Golden. The City has asked us to let you know that the Clear Creek Trail and Bikepath is CLOSED between McIntyre and Ford Street due to construction activity adjacent to the Clear Creek Trail.
If you weren't working on the new black diamond trail at Buffalo Creek with COMBA this weekend you missed out on a great time! We made excellent progress thanks to a turnout of enthusiastic volunteers who were stoked to have a hand in construction of the Front Range's first public, mountain bike-specific, advanced-level trail. The sections built this weekend are going to be a ton of fun to ride, with everything from burly lines to optional drops and rollers to flowy bermed singletrack.
The Colorado Mountain Bike Association is deeply saddened by the recent loss of Anthony Sloan – a friend, Yeti tribesman and member of our Board of Directors.
COMBA is currently considering ways in which to honor Anthony as a valued member of the local MTB community. We will keep you posted.
Anthony's mother has asked that we share this poem from T.S. Eliot in remembrance of Anthony.
LITTLE GIDDING
With the drawing of this Love and the voice of this Calling
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
